History of the McCulloch House
The John McCulloch House, also known as Montrose,
was built in the summer of 1870. It is the last remaining structure associated with the McCulloch family who contributed significantly to the settling of Clarksville,
The McCulloch House sits on block 18 of Clark's Grant, which was obtained by George Rogers Clark in 1789.
John McCulloch became only the 5th owner of parcel 18
when he purchased it in 1854. The McCulloch family farm raised corn, potatoes, beans and livestock until 1946
when the house was sold.
More recently, in 1993, the house was purchased and renovated into Major McCulloch's Steak House.
Then in 1996, the historic farm house was purchased by
Sam Anderson. For the past 24 years it has been home to
three of his restaurants; Sunset Grill, Stratto's and Sam's Food and Spirits, and also operated for a brief time as an event venue called Plantation Montrose.
Finally, in July of 2016, Sam sold the the house to another restaurateur, but only a year later, won it back when
the new owner faulted on the deal.
Earlier this year, Sam stepped down fr0m
Sam's Food and Spirits and has decided to re-focus his
energies on the McCulloch House, opening it as an
event and meeting center.
